Description
The Bachelor in Occupational Health and Safety is designed to develop a practitioner and managerial cadre of occupational health and safety professionals with the skills, knowledge, and values needed to promote respect, transparency, diversity, teamwork, professionalism, perfection, innovation and ethical-oriented occupationally safe and healthy workspaces. Within the period of four years, the programme will develop, occupational health and safety professionals who possess knowledge, skills and attributes in:
- Preventing harm to workers, property, the environment and the general public by identifying hazardous conditions and practices; thereby implementing alternative safe practices and/or corrective measures.
- Promoting occupational health and safety within organizations by communicating to workers and management about risks and hazards, training workers on how to prevent risks and hazards, and how to protect themselves while performing various job-related tasks.
- Collecting data on work environments for ongoing analysis that may predict risks and hazards, and identify sources of exposure and/or contamination.
- Conducting workplace inspections and determine areas and practices that do not comply with laws, best practices, and/or employer policies.
- Developing and implementing programmes to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, radiological, and biological agents or ergonomic factors as well as prepare an emergency response plan.
- Advising management on how to increase worker productivity through raising morale, reducing absenteeism and equipment downtime while saving on insurance, workers’ compensation benefits, and litigation expenses through cost effective safety and health prevention measures.
- Responding to accidents or incidents by utilizing emergency response plans, investigating the event, assisting the worker(s) with immediate and long-term rehabilitation with a focus on returning to work and promoting corrective action to prevent a similar incident from happening again.
- Maintaining complete health and safety records as required by law and by company policies and preparing data records.

OSH Management Specialists can work in diverse settings, such as manufacturing plants, construction sites, healthcare facilities, or even government agencies. OSH Management Specialists can do risk assessments, OSH audits, develop policies and procedures, provide training and implement preventative measures to protect workers from work-related injuries or illnesses. |
